Job Title: Controller
About the Company:
Our client is a managed accounting and fractional CFO practice serving growth-stage and mid-market businesses with outsourced accounting, financial reporting, CFO advisory, and financial transformation. They are practitioner-led and precision-first.
Job Description:
Our client is seeking a technically sharp, self-directed Controller to lead accounting operations across a portfolio of managed accounting clients and for the firm's internal operations. This role demands a practitioner who owns their workload, takes the lead without being asked, and brings the systems thinking needed to manage multi-entity, cross-industry accounting environments efficiently. You are fluent in QuickBooks Online, curious about AI-enabled accounting automation, and capable of delivering clean, audit-ready financials on deadline.
Responsibilities of the role:
• Lead month-end close for a portfolio of managed accounting clients; review and approve close packages, reconciliations, and financial statements before delivery.
• Review client books continuously for anomalies, misclassifications, and control gaps; escalate material issues to the engagement CFO with documented findings.
• Manage client-specific chart of accounts, close calendars, AP/AR workflows, and reconciliation schedules across multiple industries and entity structures.
• Support onboarding of new managed accounting clients: system setup, data migration, chart of accounts design, and opening balance reconciliation.
• Apply AI automation tools and QuickBooks integrations to improve efficiency and accuracy across the client portfolio.
• Own the general ledger for the firm; manage month-end and year-end close with variance analysis and written narrative for the Managing Principal.
• Manage semi-monthly payroll and coordinate domestic and international contractor payments via Wise, Deel, or equivalent platforms.
• Coordinate with the external CPA firm on federal, state, and local tax compliance, filings, and planning.
Required Experience and Qualifications:
• 5-8 years of accounting experience with at least 2 years in a controller or senior accounting manager role
• CPA or internationally recognized equivalent credential (ACCA, CPA Australia, or equivalent national designation)
• Expert-level QuickBooks Online proficiency; multi-entity, multi-industry environment experience
• Strong US GAAP and accrual-basis financial reporting knowledge
• Self-starter: takes ownership, identifies problems proactively, and drives resolution independently
Preferred Skills:
• Experience in fractional accounting, professional services, or outsourced CFO environments
• Hands-on experience with AI automation tools or QuickBooks integrations (Fathom, Syft, Dext, Vic.ai)
• Cross-industry accounting background: e-commerce, professional services, real estate, non-profit, or manufacturing
• Experience designing or improving internal controls over financial reporting
Personality:
• Self-directed and proactive
• Detail-oriented and accurate
• Systems thinker
Software & Tools:
• QuickBooks Online
• AI automation tools (e.g., Fathom, Syft, Dext, Vic.ai)
• Payment platforms (e.g., Wise, Deel)
Schedule:
Full-time preferred, part-time considered
Consistent US Eastern time overlap required
Salary and Benefits:
• Payment in USD or Local Currency according to candidate's preference.
• Full-time remote opportunity.
